Presentation Description: Portland’s Deconstruction Ordinance Outcomes

The City of Portland, Oregon, adopted its ground-breaking deconstruction requirement in 2016. What was initially viewed as an experiment has since become a model policy and inspiration for other municipalities in North America. Having overseen the development, implementation, and evolution of Portland’s deconstruction efforts, Shawn Wood will share outcomes and lessons from the past six years.

Meet Shawn Wood

Shawn Wood is a Construction Waste Specialist with the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. Shawn’s 25-plus-year career has included transit planning, urban planning, and design and, more recently, waste planning. For the past decade, Shawn has put his knowledge and experience in design construction, and material reuse into policy efforts. Shawn currently oversees Portland’s Deconstruction Ordinance is a first-of-its-kind requirement for the deconstruction of Portland’s oldest and most historic houses. Shawn is a preservationist at heart and has a strong passion for restoration and woodworking.
